Casting in Plaster

     Once the sculpting is finished, preparation begins for the bronzing process. The bronze foundry needs an exact copy of the statue in wax. This copy will be hollow with 1/4" thick walls. (The third thumbnail photo below.)

     To make a copy a mold is first made. This is done by covering the clay figure with plaster. (For detailed parts polyurethane or silicone rubber is applied then the plaster.)

Applying plaster in sections.

Mold complete. Notice the left hand hanging. For convenience it was detached and  made with a separate mold.

Like a 3-D puzzle the sections fit perfectly together.
